Ezra Calls Out to God (by Distant Shores Media/Sweet Publishing)

This is the second post in a series about the “sending away of foreign wives” in the book of Ezra: a text that is very confusing for the modern reader – but is actually extremely timely for the church today.

In my first post, I gave you an overview of the story from the book of Ezra.

Now I want to share with you two “Eye-Openers” God has recently shown me as I’ve studied this story:

  1. The Foreign Wives were (Polygamous) Second Wives.

There is ample evidence in the book of Ezra that the men who had returned to Jerusalem returned with their Israelite wives. They already had wives when they got there (and children too). But after they returned to Jerusalem, they married foreign wives, in addition to the wives they already had.

I also believe, and will show ample Biblical evidence to support, that the second marriages were not marriages at all in God’s eyes, but were a breach of the covenant with the sfirst wife and a form of sexual slavery for the second wife.

I will show how sending these “wives” back to their homeland resulted in the restoration of covenant marriages between the men and their first wives.

This, of course, puts this story in a whole new light.

2. Ezra responded drastically to this nation-wide sexual sin – even though “everyone was doing it” – and that is how we should respond to porn use today.

I believe that the situation in Ezra is analogous to the situation in the church today, where almost two-thirds of church-going men admit to using porn regularly. (And so do 54% of pastors.) These “digital harams” being imported into our homes through the internet are the modern-day equivalent of the illicit sexual partners (aka foreign wives) invading Israelite marriages and homes in Ezra’s day.

Ezra’s response was to weep and mourn and tear clothes, but in our day the response has been to shrug shoulders and say “oh well, everyone is doing it. There’s nothing we can do about it.“

Well, “everyone” was doing it in Ezra’s day too, but Ezra’s response was very different from ours – and his response moved the entire nation to a complete, 180 degree, change.

There is so much we can learn from Ezra’s response and from this story as a whole, and I’m going to explore all of it in this series of posts.

Stay Tuned …
